Social Studies 4

Social Studies is a Required Area of Study in Saskatchewan’s Core Curriculum. Grade 4 students of social studies will explore Saskatchewan, from historical, cultural, geographic, economic, and contemporary societal perspectives. Students will develop an understanding of Saskatchewan’s diverse First Nations heritage, the evolution of the Métis, and the diversity of those who have come to Saskatchewan from elsewhere in Canada and the world.

Students will develop an understanding of the deeply rooted connections of people to land in Saskatchewan. They will explore the agricultural heritage of the province, as well as the importance of contemporary agricultural and other primary industries, including mining, forestry, oil, and natural gas, as well as exploring other economic sectors including manufacturing and services sectors.

Treaty education will focus upon the Treaty relationship in Canada, and the benefits of this relationship to all. Students will also explore the decision-making process at the provincial government level, and explore the decision-making process in First Nations and Métis communities. Social studies in Grade 4 is designed to help students understand how Saskatchewan came to be the dynamic province it is today.
