Student Support Teacher Spotlight

Did you know the DLC has Student Support Teachers? For students who are registered as full-time distance learners with us, teachers Cara Owens and Michelle Lee-Klaassen are here to help your family navigate your child’s unique learning needs.

Cara and Michelle are special education teachers who can provide individualized one-on-one support for students with exceptional needs. Our student support teachers work with students to develop skills and independence, provide access to appropriate learning opportunities and supports, and through meaningful instruction, create opportunities for all students to reach their potential.

Michelle works mainly with students in grades K-9, while Cara works primarily with students in grade 10-12. The student support team helps with goal-setting and check-ins, and provides extra guidance for structuring courses and assignments. They connect with their students regularly through phone calls, email, and video conferencing to help students find the best strategies to be successful at the DLC. Cara and Michelle also work on personalized plans in areas such as reading and writing.

In addition to all of this, our student support team works closely with the rest of our DLC teachers to make sure the right accommodations are available for your students. They also work in consultation with the school division’s Student Support Services team and are your bridge at the DLC to accessing wider services that may be offered by the school division or province.

If you are a full-time distance learner under the age of 22 and believe that our student support team could help you find greater success, please contact your DLC teacher.
